Nice to meet you!
🌏 Welcome to the East Asian Academic Research Society!
First and foremost, we want to clarify one thing:
We are not a "cultural exchange club." We are an academic organization focusing on history, society, politics, and more. 📚
Our primary activity is discussing and debating topics related to East Asia—including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ryukyu, and China—from an academic perspective. We cover a wide range of issues, such as territorial disputes, textbook controversies, and human rights violations.
Why do the exact same events look so drastically different depending on who you ask?
Our goal is not to decide "who is right." Instead, we deeply value exploring why these differences in perception exist in the first place.
History is often told from a Japanese perspective in Japan, and a Korean perspective in South Korea. By reading and comparing source materials from different sides, we aim to understand the underlying values and social contexts, creating a space for deeper, more nuanced discussions.
📝 Membership Requirements
Language Proficiency: No specific language skills are strictly required. 🙆♂️
Japanese: Since we read academic literature, being able to use Japanese will make it easier to participate in discussions.
Korean/Chinese: Not required at all! (In fact, we have current members who don't speak them). Of course, if you can read or speak them, you are more than welcome! ✨
